If you work from home, whether part-time, full-time or even just when you need to catch up, it’s important to have a space within your smart home in which you can be your most productive. The less time spent in your home office or study will mean more time to relax and enjoy time with your family or your TV.

There are many things that can help to keep your smart home work space efficient and productive, but one that is often overlooked is giving your smart home the right scent to help you work.

Scents to enhance alertness and memory

Numerous studies have been carried out to reveal which scents can help to improve productivity either by alleviating stress, increasing memory, boosting energy or helping to focus the mind. Everyone will have their favourites but these are some we’ve found to be popular:

1) Peppermint

Another widely used aromatherapy oil, peppermint often invokes clean and fresh memories from our childhood. Associated with toothpastes, mints and ice cream; peppermint is an energising scent. It’s fresh and ‘zingy’ feeling can help to enhance memory and increase alertness, leaving you feeling alert and awake upon smelling it.

Several studies have been carried out including one by the Wheeling Jesuit University that found peppermint could be linked to greater cognitive stamina, motivation and overall performance.

2) Cinnamon

While cinnamon is also a stimulant, found to have similar effects on working memory and attention span as peppermint in the Wheeling Jesuit University study, it’s also a comforting scent that is instantly recognisable. The sweet and spicy fragrance helps to both stimulate the mind and aids performance in more mentally fatiguing tasks. It can even help to relax tight muscles and ease joints, helping you to work more effectively and more comfortably.

3) Citrus

Citrus fruits such as orange or lemon are known for being a great source of Vitamin C and are associated with with bright, fresh and energising properties in everything from food to cleaning products. This scent promotes concentration and has calming and clarifying properties that are helpful when you’re feeling angry, anxious or run down. Simply smelling these all-round superfruits gives a boost of energy and alertness.

4) Rosemary

Rosemary is an excellent early morning pick-me-up. It helps to improve memory retention while at the same time counteracts fatigue, headaches and mental strain. Like cinnamon, rosemary is a great double-punch scent that will keep you energised, as well as de-stressed, in order to be your most productive. However, also like cinnamon, rosemary is a scent strongly associated with food, so you might want to avoid these two if you’re trying to avoid snacking while you work.
